Lake Orchard Update: Oct 17, 2009 |
| This
was a tough year in the orchard. It started with poor spring
pollination due to damp cool weather that kept the pollinators
at home, went on to a long dry summer (apples love rain and
we didn't have
much
until
August),
and closed with the earliest hard freeze in about thirty
years. But, farming of any variety takes a certain amount
of optimism, and so we're already looking forward to a good
year next year. We just tilled the rows to plant another
200 trees next spring. We're putting in more Honey Crisp,
and also planting a couple of rows of Paula Red, an early
apple, all on dwarf rootstock. We're also progressing with
our plans to become Certified Organic. By harvest next year
we should have completed the documenatation and inspections
necessary to do so. Drive past the orchard occasionally to
see the seasons change, and if
you
have
a school,
church, or
civic group that would like an orchard tour at any time.
let us know. Thanks again for stopping by. See
you in the orchard in Sept 2010! |
